Heat stress is a major killer of urban wildlife. Here are some tips for helping when you come across an animal near your home or on a drive.
Heat Stressed Possums:
* Call BADGAR to report the animal. Please give your name, address and a contact number to the rescue team member. It is very important to tell the rescuer exactly where you found the animal.
* Using a pillow case or towel, gently grasp the animal and place the animal in a cardboard box - no plastic - with a wet towel underneath it and over top of it.
* Offer the animal a mix of 'gastrolyte' or plain water. Often they appreciate a little natural honey mixed in with the water. Ensure the water is cool but not fridgid cold for best digestion. Most animals under stress will not eat food anyway and its best until they have been assessed by a vet not to offer food to them.
* Keep the animal in a quite, cool and preferably dark place until the rescuer arrives.
