Record Temperatures of 45.3C
today ( 47.9 on Saturday the 7th) and the fires across the state have
made national news over the last few days.
For the past two weeks temperatures have been unbreathable for most humans and the animals are suffering too...literally a plague of native wildlife are coursing into suburbs around us and the phones been ringing off the hook.
Walking into my team leaders house this afternoon was like
walking into a hospital triage center..hydration supplies everywhere
feeding tubes and iodine, multiple possums in wet pillow cases awaiting
transport, cages full of wriggling pouches, cages of birds, mostly
chicks it was organized chaos as rescuers dropped off picked up and
stuffed cars with crates.
We have seen such a huge increase
in call outs and rescues...its almost unbelievable. With Fires burning
from Gippsland to Mt Disapointment there is a huge need right now for
volunteers and donations to house feed and rehydrate those animals that
can be saved. Sadly, many cant.
In the last 24 hours alone, over 60 animals mostly ring tail possums and native birds have been recovered throughout our city area and many more are in or awaiting placement. Possum babies thrown out of the pouch have had to be euthanased and several more are now at the Annakie, Greendale and other shelters , 6 going in one car on one trip alone.
Amongst the sadness at seeing these gorgeous animals suffering there have been a few wins..my son and I returning 3 lovely ringy's, one with a pouch full of little ones, to their home trees...re hydrated and given a second chance at making it though.
Here's some of the lucky ones...reydrating Ringtails...

I would like to thank everyone in the area who has been so supportive of our efforts these past few days..Jo, Michelle and the 'secret donaters' who've slipped a 20 here and there to us for fuel, those who've beeped and waved and let us know they're behind us and the people that have phoned in and asked to help. THANK YOU! You help us to help them..and make it all worthwhile.
