Birds

We are fortunate to live in a  wildlife rich area here on the Bay's, though all too regularly we have everything from tiny penguins to the biggest seabirds as well as birds of prey showing up on our doorstep. Some come in simply exhausted from their migrations others victims of cat or dog attack.

Caring for birds requires a special set of skills and empathies I've yet to master fully, though I am lucky that in my time as a rescuer/transporter  to have been able to learn slowly, through my mentor, who has just the right balance of both and looks after seabirds as a specialty. Here are some of the feathered fellows Ive been fortunate enough to look after this past year.

This little gem is a tiny Nankeen Kestrel, part of the Falcon family . She's about a month old, the size of a teacup and still fledging.

This gorgeous beast is Fred, a Black Browed Albatross who is so stunning both by his presence and size.

A flock of baby magpies! Sooooooooo noisy! They love their tucker too!

This is Swanny..a baby swan, one of my rescues from Caroline Springs. She crash landed in a lovely lady's backyard and was quite easy to catch. She became quite ill after rescue and was taken to Melbourne Zoo for treatment but thankfully she is now back swimming with a new flock where there are plenty of fish.

This cutie pie is Gus..he is a baby seagull who has been in residence now since he was just a puff of fluff. One thing about birds that makes me grateful I dont have to house them is they POOP EVERYWHERE!

Tux the Little Penguin, stayed a week and is now at Phillip Island Sanctuary.

Iceberg the Pelican transported to Melbourne Zoo...his story is in my blog!

Hoo the Barn Owl..rescued and successfully released.

Boo the Boobock Owl, came in very ill, but rehabbed well and was successfully released.

Nakeen Kestral adult, rehabbed @ Hawke Haven then released.

Byron and Poh, Ravens

This isn't him. but I did have a gorgeous Eclectus here for a few days..a very cheeky one too! Now at Nigels Animal Shelter.

Hally the very special Little Penguin.

Mumbles the muttering Galah.
