Womble passes day 3..Vici update.
February 7, 2009
Well..so far so good and while I remain poised to accept she might not make it, Womble has passed day 3 and is still going strong. She's drinking and pooping and is I think, the most traveled baby possum in Melbourne. Because she's so little and needs 2 hrly feedings I cant go far from home without her and if I am going to be longer than 2 hours she comes with me. So she has been everywhere! I think she likes the car, like any newborn, the hum and movement seem to relax her.
I almost handed her to another carer yesterday when I had to go out and rescue some other possums yesterday in 47.6C temperatures ..I was so energy sapped...desicated I think is the best word...and I just wasnt looking forward to another broken nights sleep...but I couldnt do it..we've bonded..we've shared germs..and when I woke up this morning and fed her I was happy she's here.
I've already arranged her release space.. if she makes it then she'll go where Victoria is now..which is fantastic and yet again, means she has a fighting chance at continuing her breed.
On the subject of Victoria...well it was too hot to release her to tree these past two days..( that and the fire risks) so she has been in crate and in an indoor cage at her new home awaiting release...apparently she is a fat pig:) and eats and eats everything she's been given..lol...and we heard yesterday that she has learnt to tip her water on her bedding to rest in the cool..which she learnt when she was here as during the heat we'd give her cool or wet towles to sleep on..lol..cheeky wench...so she's doing it for herself now mirroring our behaviors..which just goes to show how smart these critters really are. She is happy..and seems to be fitting in well up there...which is wonderful to know and has reduced my sads at seeing her go.
I was asked yesterday "Why do it?" To which I could only say "So my kids kids can have possums and bats and wombats and echindna's to see and to admire just as I have had..to share the joy of nurturing other life forms..to care for them when they cant help themselves.....to be doing it..to be caring."
