Roo rescue

July 26, 2009
Late yesterday afternoon we received a call from a lovely widlife aware couple by the roadside who had spotted a roo caught in a wire fence near Deer Park. When we arrived the roo was suspended upside down and in obvious distress. This is known as a 'fence hanging' and it is a particularly slow and nasty death for the animal if left unfound.

After administering some sedation, we managed to use bolt cutters to release the animal and then assess the damage. Both his legs were affected the right more than left, with a large laceration covering the entire shin bone of the right.
His toes, essential for rehabilitation and recovery, had been pinned and were very sore.

There were several things in our favor. He was young, about 3 yrs old, our arrival time was under 30 minutes from the initial call out, and he had no broken bones.

After some TLC, he was eventually transported to the Annakie wildlife shelter and there, after assessment, has been given a 70% survival/rehab chance which is a fantastic result.

So sad to see an animal in this conditon. The area he was found in,  is known to us as a terrible spot for wallaby's and roo's alike. Most motorists whizz by without realising they are in a native animal corridor..thankfully, these lovely people ( Thank you Kerrie)  were aware and saw him just in the nick of time.

Here are the pics of his rescue.

It was a satisying rescue, in that we were ableto provide pain relief and give him some water, he was easily sedated and didnt bolt when the wire came down. He allowed me to dress his wounds with little fuss and he survived the intial rush without capture shock. We were also able to speak to the lovely locators who have a history of wildlife care and share knowledge as well.

All up Sunday was a busy busy day.

Iceburg the Pelican

July 26, 2009
With the pelican still dropping his wing and with bad beak bruises evident we set out again this morning to bring him in.

Not wishing a repeat of yesterday, and with him situated on the rocks in the channel which made hand rescue impossible, we managed to secure a boat from the fantastic people at Anchorage Boat Sales. These guys have often assisted us with water rescues; birds seals and dolphins and today very early on a sunday have helped again - thank you guys!

Here is the culprit of yester...

Operation Mandy Pants - or - yes Hobsons council we need a boat.

July 25, 2009
Intrepid rescuer's we BADGARians are and today even more so.

With water temps below 4 degrees and wind chill bringing bayside temperatures down to a balmy 7 or so , we joined the rescue of a human savvy pelican with wing and beak damage at the warmies in Newport.

Somewhere between 'slowly slowly' and Go' our fearless and furless team leader Mandy Hall took an improptue swim, chasing said pelican into the water waist deep...BRRRR!

So..after we had stopped laughing and with a cheeky well fed pelic...

July 21, 2009
Here are some more pics of Hoo, the barn owl. He made it through the night which is fantastic...he's currently eating roo mince and egg yolk and is still being hand fed as he is still very weary, but a good sign is that he was standing up in his box this morning...something that made me jump out of my skin at first, but very happy to see..oh..and he got my pinki finger with a talon last night OUCH! Its like a needle..and this morning it is all lumpy and sore..and that was through a glove!

July 20, 2009
I cant believe it has been so long since I updated this site!
I have been very busy building the new BADGAR Hobsons Bay webpages and I'm finally finished!

You can take a sneak peek before the launch here:

http://www.badgarhobsonsbay.com

This month I have been on several pick ups - one of which was a beautiful adult Nankeen Kestral, through which I had the pleasure of meeting senior vet staff at Melborne Zoo.

I lost an adult male possum who was hit by  a car which was very sad and I have mourned an...

Bumps n bruises and Boomba

June 25, 2009
Sadly Ariel didnt make it. Her mother was hit by a car and Ariel also was also traumatised and rolled in pouch. Bruises started to appear on day 2 of her care and she passed away shortly after. Such delicate little creatures it is very sad to see.

Swanny came back into care yesterday, she has injured her foot and needs a few days of antibiotics. She is having fun at our team leaders house and will be released again in 5 or 6 days. She integrated well into the local group of swans and enjoys th...

Ariel

June 21, 2009
Another pinky possum came in yesterday. Same size as Aria so Ive named her Ariel. She seems to be holding her own and feeding well. She has a bump on her head and a bruise which makes me suspect there may be some neurological damage involved, time will tell. She's been here about 24 hrs now so I thought it best to put in an entry...as with Aria, you just cant tell which ones will make it and which ones wont. Doing everything I can, the rest is up to her.

Aria.

June 19, 2009
Sadly little Aria didnt make it through the night.
She stopped feeding yesteerday afternoon and died peacefully close to my skin.
I take solace in that she was warm and fed and not hounded.

I have discovered that unless these little ones have some rudimentry brown pigment on their skin, their immune systems dont seem to be functioning. Our milk and the adjustment to external immune supports like Impact etc..can help but arent the same and the adjustment period to th...
