busy busy busy...and loving it!

October 3, 2009
Heya folks!

Sorry its been a while since I posted last...we've been happily busy caring transporting and preparing for fire season!

This month I fell in love with a little native Boobook owl I named..yes..Boo. He came in very sick..had been kept as a pet (grr) and was covered in excrement and had been for so long it was rock solid, he couldnt even poo or open his wings. At first the vet's wanted to put him down he was not expected to live,  but my intrepid shelter mum Mandy at Hobsons Bay shelter decided no way..and we nabbed him for a trial rehab run. We bathed and fed and nurtured him to be well enough to go to the Raptor shelter in Ballarat and thanks to those combined efforts Boo not only made it, he is comming home tomorrow for release back into the wild! There is a large local population of Boo's near to me so it will be a precious moment. Yes I'll try and get pics:)

Here's the pics I have to date.

Boo decided he didnt want his eye cream put in..

Boo after his bath...

Boo's morning grumpy face...on the way to Ballarat...yes..it was early in the morning for us too!

I think after Hoot the barn owl and now Boo, I might have to 'get into' raptors, especialy Owls...I seem to have a knack with capture and care that even I didnt know I had...and when Boo decided he didnt want to be manually fed and stood on my arm to just take the meat from my hand..it was one of 'those' moments..a beautiful 'god sigh' one..the same 'moment' thing I had with my first possum...these animlas just 'know'...and you know what you know when you know it..right? :) Anyway...do check back for release pics..if he doesnt bolt straight off.

A busy difficult month

September 21, 2009
Hi Everyone

Yes its been a busy month and a difficult one. Busy in that we've had penguins, pigeons, ravens, possums of all kinds in and out and flying around, and difficult because we've had to deal with some pretty miserable situations and sadly..miserable people.

I would just like to say for the record.... to all the cynical pirates out there ...
 HOPE EXISTS!

Further to that, I would genuinely like to thank THEM simply for exisiting..why?
Because in just being themselves, in being the cyn...

August 20, 2009
Weigh day today...
Molly:  155gms thats  +18gms
Pete:    157gms thats + 28gms
...and the twins are going well...Ive been crook with but have managed to keep the routine going..its been kind of comforting. Molly is such a beastie...very fast and lots of personality and curiosity...Pete is slower..lazy almost...but enjoys his run round at nights. They've already been having nibbles of watermelon and banana and its been very funny to watch...just like with human child, you give them a taste of eac...

little fatties

August 14, 2009
Just an update on Molly and Pete, they are going very well and have put on 22gms and 17 gms respectivly!

They are very much twins in the sense that I seperatred them into two pouches to stop them scratching each other and they kept climbing back in together and dont like being out of sniff range very long.

Have to say this time, with so much else happening in my week, that early feeds at 3 am, migraines and breaks in sleep means this time, setting routine has been  more difficult...also its a lo...

Welcome Molly and Pete

August 11, 2009
Rare brushtail twins came in yesterday, we've named them Molly and Pete.
Ive been given the honour of raising them and already theyve worn me out as twins do:)

I'm very tired this morning, its been a while since ive had to do night feeds, so I will just upload the first pic of them and will write soon.

They're very fussy eaters...they are velvet...gorgeous..and very much little characters!
Yesterday they were holding each others tails...so cute.

Best news ever!

August 9, 2009
Two things this week!

Miss Victoria has a baby in her pouch!!  I'm a grandma!

For those of you that have been reading my blog for a while, you'd know Miss Vic was the first possum to come into my care as a backrider...she is now at a special location near Violet town and I've just been informed that she has had a baby! :)
I am so so happy!

THAT is cycle completion to me...when an animal can come in, be helped and assisted back into the wild..and be well enough go on to make more...what a success...

ok...

August 5, 2009

Thanks to Ivica and the lovely racing pigeon people in Melton I learned that Coo wasnt a homing or racing pigeon after all but a 'fancy' pigeon, of a kind called  'nun' pigeon because he/she has a crest! Then....thanks to the people at Melbourne Pigeon Society I discovered no, not a Nun but a Crested Helmut...'entirely different breed'! ok....
So after tracking down Coo's birthplace through a ring tag search, which was funnily enough, the  Hunter Valley NSW, and after talking to a gentlement t...

fly away home

August 4, 2009
This gorgeous peacock coloured homing pigeon was dropped off last night. He was in a bad way and I originally thought his feet had been mangled. It turns out it was old muck and mud..stuck in clumps like rock to his tiny nails. After a good soak and having had his nails clipped he is currently occupying the possy avairy and seem to be settling. He is very underweight but other wise in good health. I think I''ll call him Coo. ( well! you think of a better name :)

I'll give him a day or two to e...
